The Most Important Decision

What do you think matters most in life?

In your mind, what is the most important decision one can make? Is it their career path? Is it the person that they choose to marry? What about choosing to stay single? How about deciding on the number of children to have, or choosing to not have children at all? Then there’s the matter of where one will live, how to handle finances (saving, spending and investing). The list could go on forever! I would submit to you, for your consideration, that as important as these choices are, none of them are the most important. There’s only one choice, one decision that can claim the top spot and that’s the decision regarding Jesus Christ. Why?

This is the only choice that one has to contend with that will determine where they spend eternity. It doesn’t matter whether one doesn’t believe that their spirit will live forever (which in itself is a flavor of rejection of Jesus). The Bible tells us humans are eternal creatures and when they cease to exist here on earth, their spirit goes to one of two places: heaven (with Jesus) or hell (without Jesus but with Satan and all the evil that exists). Spoiler alert: there is no neutral territory, no fence sitting. To refrain from saying ‘yes’ to Jesus’s offer of forgiveness is the same as saying ‘no’ to it.

The decision a person makes regarding Jesus Christ impacts every other decision made, for good or ill. For those of you who’ve decided that you believe Jesus is Who He says He is (as detailed in the Bible), WOOHOO!!! I look forward to meeting you in heaven one day (and the way things are looking, that’s coming soon). For those of you who are still rejecting Jesus, I would ask you: why? Serious question here. He’s the only One Who knows you thoroughly, including the shameful things that no one else knows about, and He still chooses to love you unconditionally. As a matter if fact, Jesus knew all the bad, unsavory things you’d do prior to creating you in your mother’s womb, and He still created you. Nothing about you is a revelation to Him. He’s on your side and wants to be part of your life.

Perhaps the one continuing in their rejection of Jesus doesn’t understand what it is exactly that He’s saving them from, what Jesus followers are talking about when they say they’re ‘saved’. The short answer? When one agrees with God that they’ve sinned against Him, accepts His offer of forgiveness and chooses to believe that Jesus:

  • is the Messiah, the only Son of God, born of a virgin

  • lived a completely sinless life

  • gave His life for us, sacrificing Himself on the cross taking the punishment for our sins

  • rose from the dead on the 3rd day

Then one is saved from experiencing the punishment due to them from God for their sins. Jesus won’t ever force someone to believe in and follow Him, in spite of what the wolves in sheep’s clothing may try to say. It’s volunteers only. If your answer to Him is ‘no’, He’ll respect your rejection of Him, the boundary you’ve set. In my opinion, when He knows one has reached a point of no return, He will stop trying to win that person's heart. Only Elohim Adonai knows when that time is for each one, so for those Christians who might be reading this, don’t stop praying or interceding for those who are lost, unless and until the Lord has directed you to do so. As long as someone is breathing on this side of eternity, there's hope.

The wise person chooses to believe that Jesus Christ is Who He says He is and gives their life to Him. Without Him, one is simply stumbling through life, in darkness. Maybe their present life will be great or maybe it won't. I can promise you that if someone leaves this existence without giving their life to Him, eternity will be worse than a horrific nightmare, no matter how "good" of a person they thought they were. What will you choose? Will you choose to follow Jesus?

I’ll leave you with this advice from Solomon, the second wisest man to have lived (Jesus of course is the wisest): Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths – Proverbs 3:5-6
